Another Comedy Spotlight Coming Soon!
In 2018, The Comedy Green Room was lucky to be involved with the “All Joking Aside” crowdfunding campaign. Animal Mother Films (AMF) welcomed the public to become active participants in the filmmaking process and connect with a community of comedians and comedy lovers.
The Comedy Green Room continued to promote and monitor this full-length feature stand-up comedy film. And on August 14th the finished product became available on Superchannel through their cable and VOD offerings, as well as for download from alljokingasidemovie.com
Producer, Jon Ornoy, Director, Shannon Kohli, Elizabeth McCarthy, and the rest of the “All Joking Aside” team have given us a feature-length comedy film about the barriers women face in the entertainment industry, told through the story of one young woman committed to beating the odds and pursuing her dream of becoming a stand-up comic.
In 2020, and despite making up more than half of the world’s population, women still only count for about 10% of the performers at comedy clubs. If we accept that women are just as funny as men, the question becomes why are there not more female comics, and what can we do about it?
The author, David Reuben, was able to see an advanced screening of “All Joking Aside” and it is a movie that evoked memories of my early days in stand-up. The main character Charlene played by Raylene Harewood. wanted to try stand-up very badly and was not prepared for the humiliation of being heckled off stage with jabs about female comic’s material. Charlene had no idea how to perform stand-up at her first opened mic. [How many comics have been in that exact situation?] Raylene brings both naivete and strength to the character of Charlene.
The heckler, Bob, played brilliantly by Brian Markinson, turns out to be a self sabotaging washed up comic who was on the verge of greatness before he chucked his career and life away. [I think we all know at least one Bob in our comedy career!]
Bob’s only friend is Dennis, played by veteran Canadian Comic Richard Lett. Dennis is the voice of reason for Bob and encourages Charlene to find a mentor who turns out to be Bob. Richard Lett puts in an excellent performance and the part shows off Mr. Lett’s acting ability and comedy timing.
The movie follows Charlene’s adventure from her first open mic to finding her comic voice with the help of Bob. The pitfalls along the way that comics encounter, learning how to structure a set, and enjoying when you kill on stage. And some of the hostility leveled towards female comics.
Both Charlene, and Bob, grow personally through this friendship while tackling some deep personal issues. Some resolved and others left unresolved. [Does this sound like a comic or two you might know?]
Even though the story is about the struggles of a female comic of colour and at one-point Bob protects Charlene from a lecherous comedy club owner. The author feels that this movie reflects many issues any new comic deals with trying to concur the exceedingly difficult world of stand-up.
